Stage set to elect new Vice-Prez

The stage is set for the election of the Vice-President on Monday. The polling will be held in Parliament from 10 am to 5 pm. After scrutiny of nomination papers only two candidates are left in the fray. Incumbent Mohammad Hamid Ansari is pitted as ruling UPA candidate against NDA's Jaswant Singh, a senior BJP leader and former finance, defence and foreign minister of the country.

As things stand as of now, the numbers seems to be on the side of the UPA candidate. The Samajwadi Party, BSP, Left, RJD and JD(S) have decided to back Ansari.

The BJP-led NDA stands united with the JD (U) and the Shiv Sena announcing their support to Singh. The AIADMK has also announced its support to Singh. The BJD had on Sunday decided to abstain from voting.

AIR correspondent reports that Ansari is seeking a second term to the post of Vice-President and, if elected, he would be the second person after philosopher and statesman Dr. S Radhakrishnan to hold the office twice.
