In UP, the stage is set for the fourth Phase of state Assembly elections being held on Sunday. Fifty six constituencies spread over 11 districts of central and Bunddelkhand regions, including the state capital Lucknow, will undergo election in this phase. A total of 967 candidates, including a eunuch, are in fray.AIR Correspondent reports that over 1.72 crore voters are eligible to vote in this phase. The Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements for holding free and fair elections. While the general and Police observers will monitor the poll process, strict vigil will be maintained through helicopters over ravines of Bundelkhand. Over 19,000 Electronic Voting Machines will be used to facilitate casting of votes.AIR correspondent says that Lucknow district has highest 211 candidates contesting from its nine assembly segments while only 27 candidates are running election on two seats of Chhatrapati Shahuji Mahraj Nagar district.The political fate of several prominent candidates is at stake in this phase.Meanwhile, the electioneering has intensified in fifth and sixth Phase areas where a total of 117 seats will undergo elections on 23rd and 28th February respectively. Kanpur was the central stage of activity yesterday where top leaders of the ruling BSP, BJP and Congress held election rallies at different places.State’s Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha held meeting of Police and Administratve officials of 13 western districts of sixth phase in Gautam Buddha Nagar, NOIDA. The Director General (M&C) Akshay Rout said that the low poll percentage in second and third phases is not a matter of worry. He hoped that the polling percentage will increase during the remaining four phases.The UP Assembly elections are being held in seven phases between February 8 and March 3. Results will be announced after the counting on March 6. The term of present UP Assembly expires on May 20 this year.
