Stage set for poll in Assam

In Assam, most of the major political parties have geared up their activities with finalisation of probable list of candidates for the State Assembly election, which is round the corner. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) spokesman said the party has so far received over 600 applications for party tickets in 126 Assembly segments of the State. The APCC has fixed 15th of this month as the deadline for submission of applications for party nominations. The main Opposition Asom Gana Parishad has already released its first list of candidates with names of 31 contestants. The party is going to contest in as many as 84 seats. The State BJP spokesman Dr. Pradip Thakuria said the party has received around 650 applications for all the 126 Assembly seats. The party’s state election committee which met in Guwahati last week has finalised the first list of the candidates and forwarded it the party Central Election Committee for final approval. Dr. Thakuria said the next meeting of the state election committee will also be held shortly to select its final list of candidates. Around 300 aspirants have sought All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) nominations. AIR correspondent reports, the full bench of the Election Commission reviewed the poll preparedness with top officials of the State last week. The Commission is likely to announce the poll schedule in the State at any time. Most of the major political parties, including the ruling Congress have demanded the Election Commission to complete Assembly polls in the State before the Bohag Bihu in mid-April. The next Legislative Assembly in the State is to be constituted by May this year.
