Stage set for M'rashtra biennial elections

In Maharashtra, the stage is set for biennial elections to the eight seats and by-election to one vacant seat in Maharashtra Legislative Council from local bodies segments tomorrow.<br/><br/>Polling will be conducted tomorrow from 8 in the morning to 1600 hrs among the members of these eight local bodies which include, two seats from Mumbai, one each from Kolhapur, Dhule, Nagpur, Akola-cum-Buldhana, Solapur and Ahmednagar. Counting of Votes will be taken up on December 21 and the results may be declared on the same day. The office of these eight seats in the House from seven Local Bodies segments expires on January 1, 2010 after completion of the six-year term of the sitting members on these seats. By-election for one ''casual'' vacancy in the House was caused due to resignation of Pratap Narayanrao Sonawane this year on May 26, who was a sitting member from Nashik Division Graduates' Constituency. Term of office of this seat will expire after less than a year on December 5 next year.<br/><br/>The Congress is contesting one of the two seats from Mumbai, while the Shiv Sena has nominated former leader of the Opposition in the assembly, Mr. Ramdas Kadam, as its candidate from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Shiv Sena has also fielded Gopikishan Bajoria in the Council elections from Vidarbha region. The BJP has put up Prasad Hire for elections to the council from Nashik for graduate constituency polls. BJP has also fielded Madhu Chavan and Ashok Mankar's candidature for the Council polls from Mumbai and Nagpur local government bodies respectively.<br/>
