In Assam, stage is all set for en-mass surrender of nine insurgent groups before the Republic Day at Guwahati on 24th January.The militants will lay down their arms in the presence of the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. The outfits to lay down arms include – All Adivsasi National Liberation Army, Adivasi Cobra Militant of Assam, Birsa Commando Force, Santhal Tigers’ Forum, Adivasi People’s Army, Kuki Liberation Army, United Kukigram Defence Army, Kuki Revolutionary Army and the Hmar People’s Convention.Meanwhile, security has been beefed up across the State following boycott call of Republic Day functions and bandh calls by several militant groups of the North-East, including the banned ULFA.The Chief Minister reviewed the security scenario of the State with the Director General of Police Jayanta Narayan Choudhury.The North East Frontier Railway has cancelled several passenger trains between Alipurduar and Dibrugarh town due to security reasons in the run up to the Republic Day celebrations in the State. Security pilot trains have also been pressed into service ahead of all express trains, including the Rajdhani Express.
