Stage set for 61st Republic Day celebrations

Stage is set for the 61st Republic Day celebrations on Tuesday. The main function will be held at the Rajpath where the President – the Supreme Commander of armed forces, Mrs. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil will unfurl the National Tricolour and take salute at the parade.The visiting South Korean President Mr. Lee Mayung-Bak will be the Chief Guest.Light combat aircraft- Tejas, the Shaurya Missile and the Rohini Radar developed indigenously by the DRDO will be the part of the Republic Day Parade for the first time.Kaleidoscopic images of the country's rich cultural diversity and military might will be on full display on the magnificent Rajpath.The rich cultural heritage is being depicted by 21 Tableaux representing 13 states and eight central ministries. Hundreds of school children will be the part of the show.Unprecedented security arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of the event. This follows inputs from intelligence agencies warning of a possible terror attack.A ground to air security apparatus is in place after reports that the terrorist outfits LeT has acquired 50 sets of para gliding equipment which could be used to launch air borne suicide attacks.Over 15,000 security personnels have been deployed on the duty besides installations of CCTV cameras are being placed on the parade routes for maintaining a tight vigil. Mobile teams, anti aircraft guns and sharp shooters of national security guards are also being deployed as a precautionary measure.AIR correspondent after visiting different areas of the city reports that the patrolling in the crowded markets has been intensified and passengers are being thoroughly frisked at Metro trains, railway stations, bus stands besides the IGI airport.
