Stage set for 5th phase of LS polls in Bengal

In West Bengal stage is set for 5th phase of Lok Sabha elections tomorrow. Elections will be held in 17 Parliamentary seats covering 7 districts North and South 24 Paraganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, East and West Midnapur and in Kolkata. The State Chief Electoral Officer Mr. Sunil Gupta told AIR that all arrangements have been completed to ensure free and fair voting. Polling personnel have already started reaching to their destinations. Over 2 crore 55 lakh 75 thousand electorate will determine the political fate of 188 candidates. More than 31 thousand polling booths have been set up in the 7 districts. Unprecedented security arrangements have been made for peaceful polling.

AIR correspondent reports, Around 508 companies of central Para military forces have been deployed in 7 districts to ensure free and fair voting. Out of total 31 thousand 392 polling booths, around 50 percent of them have been identified as sensitive. Important candidates in the fray include former Union Minister Sudeep Bandyopadhyay. Prof. Sugata Basu and film star Dev of Trinamul Congress, Mr. Somen Mitra and Union Minister and Pradesh Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Dr. Asim Dasgupta and Dr. Sujan Chakraborty of CPI(M), State BJP President Mr. Rahul Sinha and former Union Minister Mr. Tapan Sikdar of the party.
