Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has said the stability of the Government is not an issue after the pullout of the DMK from the UPA. Talking to the media outside parliament, he said the Government has a majority in parliament. Mr. Chidamabaram said when a delegation of three union ministers met DMK chief M. Karunanidhi in Chennai yesterday, he wanted the Government to move amendments to the US resolution and also demanded that parliament adopt a resolution to condemn the human rights violations in Sri Lanka. Mr. Chidambaram said the Government received the final draft of the UNHCR resolution only late last night and it is considering whether amendments can be moved to strengthen that resolution. On the demand for a resolution in parliament, Mr. Chidambaram said all political parties will have to be consulted and the consultations have begun.
Mr. Chidambaram said the government has taken note of media reports quoting Mr. Karunanidhi as saying that his party will reconsider its decision to pull out of the UPA if a resolution on Sri Lanka is brought in parliament.
