Stability of essential commodities prices remains high on Govt agenda : Pranab

Sharing the concern of the members in the Rajya Sabha on inflation, the government today said that it has touched single digit after 16 months. Giving the details, the Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, while replying supplementaries, said that the wholesale Price Index of food items has come down from over 20 per cent in February to 9.30 per cent in the current month. Enumerating the fiscal and monetary steps taken to arrest the rising trend of inflation, Mr. Mukherjee said stability of prices of the essential commodities remained high on the agenda. Strongly pleading to address the leakage in the Public Distribution System, the Finance Minister said the government is doing its best to reduce the adverse impact on vulnerable sections. He said a subcommittee consisting of chief ministers had already been constituted to deal with PDS system. The finance minister informed the House that the reports are awaited.
