Shah Rukh Khan today received support from an unlikely corner with the Shiv Sena saying that the actor should not be targeted only because he is a Muslim. Speaking to a news agency, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said India is a tolerant country and the minority community in India is also tolerant. Mr. Raut, however said that Shah Rukh Khan should not have got into this debate.

The 50-year-old actor was yesterday targeted by BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya who tweeted that Shah Rukh's "soul" is in Pakistan though he lives in India. Earlier today BJP MP Yogi Adityanath also compared Shah Rukh to Pakistani terrorist Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind of Mumbai carnage.

Mr. Raut slammed Vijayvargiya's comments and asked the BJP general secretary not to bring Pakistan into this debate on tolerance. Stating that the issue is India's internal matter; Raut said Shah Rukh Khan is a superstar only because India is tolerant and has never thought in the name of religion.

Mr. Raut today also said that the number of artists and writers who have returned their awards is quite miniscule and these people do not represent the collective conscious of Indian citizens. Actor Anupam Kher also came out in support of Shah Rukh Khan. He tweeted saying that some BJP members need to control their tongue. Kher said Shah Rukh is a national icon and the industry is proud of him.
