Sri Lankan Navy has extended its gratitude for Indian High Commission in Colombo and Indian navy for their prompt response in rescue operations of a container ship off the Sri Lankan coast.

It said in a statement that the dousing operations are still underway with the unprecedented assistance of the Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy. It said the endeavour clearly demonstrates the maritime cooperation between Sri Lanka and India in dealing with rescue missions in the maritime domain.

The statement came as three ships of Indian navy and coast guard were put in operation to help Sri Lanka's navy to battle the fire. The ship named MSC Daniela was travelling from Singapore to Egypt when it caught fire last night about 222 kilometres away from Sri Lanka.

The ship has been brought within 20 kilometres off Colombo coast. Indian Coast Guard Ship CGS Shoor which was incidentally on a visit to Colombo, was rushed to spot for the firefighting operations following Sri Lanka's request. Indian Navy ships INS Gharial and INS Darshak were also sent early this morning. The cause of fire is not known yet and there are no casualties among the 22-member crew.
