Srikrishna Committee on Telangana chalks out its plans

The high level committee on Telangana at its first meeting in New Delhi yesterday, chalked out certain plans including visits to Hyderabad and other places. Speaking to media after their three hour long meeting, the Chairman of the Committee Retired Justice B.N. Shrikrishna said that they would hold a series of meetings with different strata of people in the affected areas to know their views . <br/><br/>The former Home Secretary Mr V.K Duggal who is part of the panel said that they also took decisions on the allotment and distribution of work and the agenda to be completed before the second meeting to be held on the 25th of this month . Mr Duggal expressed the confidence that the committee will be able to submit its report before the deadline of 31st of December and will not ask for extensions. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, yesterday's bandh in Telangana region, called by the Joint Action Committee protesting against terms of reference for the SriKrishna Committee, evoked partial response. Barring minor incidents, bandh supported by all-Party Telangana JAC and the pro-Telangana organisations passed off peacefully in all the 10 districts of the region amidst tight security.<br/><br/>The all-party Telangana Joint Action Committee has called upon the MLAs who are interested in Telangana, to quite the Assembly in protest against the terms of reference of SriKrishna Committee. JAC convener Prof. Kodandaram told reporters that the JAC has unanimously decided at its meeting to tender resignations in a prescribed format. Rejecting the terms of reference of SriKrishna Committee, the Convener said resignations would help creating Constitutional crisis in the state so that formation of Telangana state would be a reality. The TDP, TRS, Congress and BJP leaders attended the meeting that went on till late evening.<br/><br/>A separate meeting of congress leaders from Telangana region, ended with divided opinion on tendering resignations. Reiterating their commitment for Telangana, four congress MLAs including former Minister R Damodar announced their decision to quit the Assembly at a press conference last evening. The TDP leader N Janardhan Reddy said all the TDP MLAs from Telangana are willing to resign but a final view would be taken today. He stressed that unless all the congress members from Telangana region resign, the Centre would not feel pressure as desired. The TRS Legislative Party leaders E Rajender said all the 10 MLAs and an MLC would resign as they have already resolved to quite the Assembly.<br/><br/>
