The former President is barred from contesting Presidential elections because of the two-term limit put up by nineteenth amendment to the constitution. The amendment has also brought four and half year limit before which Parliament cannot be dissolved by the President. Parliament completes its four and half year in February next year and can only be dissolved before that by a motion supported by two-third of members.
''
'' SLPP has also said that victory of their candidate will mean that the present government under Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe has lost the mandate to rule and should resign.
