Sri Lanka's Ex-Army Chief moved to Eelikada prison

Sri Lanka's former Army Chief and MP Sarath Fonseka has been moved to Welikada prison from the Navy Head quarters. He is expected to serve his 30 months’ jail sentence there , even as the opposition termed his imprisonment as a 'degrading form of revenge'. Fonseka was arrested two weeks after his defeat in the January 26 presidential elections and has since remained in military custody at the Naval headquarters.Fonseka's wife Anoma said her family was not discouraged by this act of 'revenge' as it was noble to stand up and die rather than kneel. Opposition DNA parliamentarian Vijitha Herath termed the sentence for the former Army Chief as a “degrading form of revenge.Meanwhile , a local media report quoting the Sri Lankan Defence Secretary and the brother of President Rajapaksa said that the President was ready for a re-evaluation of the recommendation of the Second Court Martial on the basis of a plea by MP Fonseka. Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that Fonseka’s conviction wasn’t a political issue and it couldn’t be resolved by protests or intervention by third parties. There are also speculations that Fonseka may also lose his parliamentary seat. Sarath Fonseka and his supporters maintain that the charges are politically motivated. Speaking to AIR his lawyers have said that they would appeal against the sentence.
