Sri Lanka's Attorney General issues release order for 120 Indian fishermen

Sri Lanka's Attorney General has issued the release order for 120 Indian fishermen who are held in custody on charges of trespassing into Sri Lankan waters.<br/><br/>According to Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry, the release has been ordered as a goodwill gesture by the government of Sri Lanka ahead of festival of Deepawali.<br/><br/>The fishermen will be produced by the officials of fisheries department at local Magistrates' courts for acquittal later today.<br/><br/>The repatriation of the fishermen is being arranged by the Indian High Commission in Colombo with the assistance of Sri Lankan Navy and the Indian Coast Guard.<br/><br/>The fishermen are likely to be back at home before the festival of Deepawali.<br/><br/>The two governments have been working on a schedule for mutual exchange of imprisoned fishermen for the last two weeks. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, 120 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody are now set to be back with their families for Deepawali. Sri Lanka's Attorney General finally issued their release order today. <br/><br/>They will now be produced before the magistrates' courts for their acquittal. <br/><br/>The release of remaining 6 Indian fishermen is also being worked out, as these fishermen face additional charge of assaulting Sri Lankan Navy personnel at the time of their capture. <br/><br/>According to Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry, their release may be announced later today. <br/><br/>The two governments have been working on a schedule for mutual exchange of imprisoned fishermen for the last two weeks. <br/><br/>There are 37 Sri Lankan fishermen in Indian custody now.
