The first results coming from Sri Lanka suggests that the ruling alliance led by Mahinda Rajapaksa is well ahead of the fractured opposition in parliamentary elections held yesterday which returned the country's lowest ever voter turnout.

The postal results declared so far have gone in the favour of ruling United People's Freedom Alliance. However, early trends in the postal ballot in Jaffna suggests that Tamil National Alliance may still retain its sway in the war ravaged Northern Province.

Counting is underway and initial indications are that that the ruling party may form the government with a comfortable majority.

The election Commission has said that there will be repolling in the Nawalpitiya electorate of the Kandy district and till such time all island final results will be with held.

Repolls are being expected to be held before the Sinhala and tamil New Year which is on the 13th and 14th of this month.

Meanwhile, ruling UPFA has also won the Hambontota district with more than 62 per cent of the votes polled in its favour and winning 5 out of the seven seats.

The remaining two seats have gone to the main opposition United National party.
