Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has said, the unitary status of the government and foremost place given to Buddhism will not be changed under any circumstances in the proposed new constitution.<br/><br/>Addressing a religious gathering in Eastern Province yesterday, the President said the draft of new constitution is not ready yet and once ready, it will be presented to Parliament for views and suggestions.<br/><br/>Mr Sirisena's comments came as a top Buddhist clergy has suggested that there is no need for a new constitution. Some hard line monks have threatened of street protests if there is an attempt to change the constitution.<br/><br/>Parliament, elected in 2015, had passed a unanimous resolution for adopting a new constitution in a bid to address minorities concerns and to bring reconciliation among various ethnic communities.
