In Sri Lanka, Presidential candidate and minister Sajith Premadasa has promised that he will provide free noon meals and two sets of school uniform to all public school children if he is elected to power.
''
'' Addressing an election rally today, he recalled that when his father, the late President Ranasingha Premadasa, had observed some school children attending school in torn uniform, he acted to provide the clothing and mid-day meals to students numbering 4.3 million.
''
'' The Presidential candidate pointed out that it was the political rivals who later abandoned the provision of meals to school children. Mr. Premadasa reiterated that he would assign the defence and law and order ministries to Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to safeguard the country's security.
''
'' Meanwhile, his main rival and former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa pointed out that Sri Lanka's sovereignty is currently under threat. He also commented that the state resources the incumbent government sold to foreign countries must be reclaimed. Mr Gotabaya added they have a policy that ensures the country moves forward, putting the nation's sovereignty at the forefront.
