Sri Lankan President signs Gazette notification to operationalize Office on Missing Persons

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has signed the Gazette notification to operationalize the Office on Missing Persons (OMP) with effect from Friday.

A notification issued by his office today said the OMP will be established and its functions, duties, and mandate will come into operation with effect from 15th September.

The move comes as UNHRC in its session on Monday has urged Sri Lankan government to swiftly operationalize the OMP, meant for probing into disappearances of thousands of people during and after LTTE war.

OMP was a key promise made by Sri Lankan government to meet its commitments for human rights but it was delayed due to political reasons. The bill in this regard was passed last August but it took more than a year to put it in place.
