Sri Lankan President prorogues parliament till Nov 16 amid political crisis

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; text-align: justify; font-size: 10pt;">Amid political crisis in Sri Lanka, </span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"> </span><span style="color: #222222;">President Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday prorogued the parliament till November 16.</span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The move came a day after he appointed former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as new Prime Minister, replacing Ranil Wickremesinghe. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The group led by Mr. Rajapaksa said they will prove their majority on the floor of Parliament on the day it is convened. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">However, Mr. Wickremsinghe maintained he is still the Prime minister claiming parliamentary majority is with him. Mr. Wickremsinghe today addressed a press conference with leaders of smaller parties indicating that the coalition is almost intact. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">United National Party (UNP) led by him has decided to organize a protest march against the President's decision in Colombo on Monday. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">Meanwhile, Mr. Rajapaksa held a meeting with his MPs to brief them on circumstances leading to his swearing in. There was no immediate announcement regarding cabinet formation but a meeting is scheduled in this regard at the President's office this evening. </span><br />''
