Seventeen days before retirement, the Sri Lankan Police Chief Mahinda Balasuriya has put in his papers, taking responsibility over the unsatisfactory manner in which the police initiated against employees of the Free Trade Zone.According to the Media Center for National Security, IGP Balasuriya is the first ever government senior official to forward his resignation in response to the act of misconduct of his subordinates.The resignation came a day after President Mahinda Rajapaksa on appointed a one-man committee to probe the violent incident in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone.Police and the Free Trade Zone workers protesting against the proposed pension scheme clashed in Katunayake on Monday where 15 police personnel including a Deputy Inspector General and more than 250 employees of the free trade zone were injured in the violence.According to reports, one of the protestor, allegedly after getting gun shot injury in the clash is in critical condition.The police Spokesperson Prashanth Jayakkody said that a Chief Inspector & Inspector of Police attached to the Negambo Police Division were arrested by the CID over the clash at Katunayake Free Trade Zone (FTZ) incident.A retired Supreme Court judge Mahanama Thilakarathna has been appointed to probe and submit a report on the incident within five days.The Sri Lankan government website reported that the committee is also empowered to make recommendations against authority, if there is any that overacted beyond the legal margins.Meanwhile Human Rights watchdog, the Asian Human Rights Commission, on Wednesday wanted to know who ordered the shooting on the workers with live bullets.
