Sri Lankan Navy arrests nine Indian fishermen

Nine Indian fishermen were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy late last night on charges of violating the international maritime boundary and poaching in Sri Lankan waters. The fishermen belong to Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu. <br/><br/>According to Sri Lankan Navy, the fishermen along with two trawlers were handed over to the officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Kankasanthurai for further legal action. With these arrests, there are 15 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody now.<br/>

Sri Lankan Navy arrests nine Indian fishermen

Sri Lankan Navy arrested nine Tamil fishermen last night when they were fishing near Katchatheevu. The Lankan Navy also confiscated two fishing boats according to fishermen who have returned from sea. The Tamil fishermen have been taken to Kankesanthurai by the Lankan Navy. Earlier this month, Sri Lankan Navy had arrested 14 Tamil fishermen and detained their three fishing boats. The country had released 126 Tamil fishermen lodged in Lankan jail as a goodwill gesture. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalithaa had sent a letter last week urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use diplomatic channel to secure the release of 14 Tamil fishermen already in Lankan jail and release of 50 fishing boats from Lankan custody.
