Sri Lankan navy arrests eight Indian fishermen

Sri Lankan navy has arrested eight Indian fishermen along with two boats last night on charges of alleged poaching in Sri Lankan waters. <br/><br/>A navy statement issued today said the arrests happened north west of Delft island. It said the fishermen will be handed over to the fisheries department in Jaffna for legal action. <br/><br/>With latest arrests, the total number of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody has gone up to 124. More than 170 boats are also in their custody. <br/><br/>Fishermen arrested for poaching into Sri Lankan waters are normally released on humanitarian grounds after a time gap but boats are retained for a longer period. <br/>

Sri Lankan navy arrests eight Indian fishermen

Eight Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested today by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line. Assistant Director of Fisheries Department, S Sekhar said in Rameswaram that their two boats were also seized by the navy. He said, the fishermen were taken to Kangesanthurai port.
