Sri Lankan Navy arrests 49 Indian fishermen for entering Lankan coastal waters

Sri Lankan Navy arrested 49 fishermen in 10 trawlers from Tamil Nadu off the coast of Jaffna in two separate incidents yesterday. The two groups of fishermen are being produced in the Magistrates’ courts in Talaimannar and Karainagar. Officials of Indian Consulate General in Jaffna will be assisting the fishermen in presenting their case. Consul General in Jaffna, Mr V Mahalingam said all efforts are being made to secure an early release of these fishermen. According to Spokesperson of Sri Lankan Navy, Commander Kosala Warnakulasurya, a group of 24 fishermen were apprehended off the Mannar coast for trespassing into the territorial waters of Sri Lanka and handed over to the Talaimannar police. In another incident, 25 fishermen were nabbed near the Kytes Island and were handed over to the fisheries department for further legal action at Karainagar.Our correspondent reports that the 49 fishermen from Tamil Nadu arrested by Sri Lankan Navy off the coast of Jaffna yesterday are being produced in the Magistrates’ courts at Talaimannar and Karainagar today. Consul General of India in Jaffna, Mr V Mahalingam says all efforts are being made to secure an early release of these fishermen. The last time the fishermen were caught by Sri Lanka Navy was in April, and they were released in May after serving a sentence of 6 weeks. The two countries have agreed to treat the trespassing fishermen humanely and they are generally released after warning or minor penalties.
