Sri Lankan Navy arrests 19 Indian fishermen on charges of trespassing into Sri Lankan waters for poaching

Sri Lankan Navy arrested 19 Indian fishermen near Point Pedro late Friday night on charges of trespassing into Sri Lankan waters for poaching. The fishermen and their two boats were later handed over to the Fisheries Department officials. They will be produced before the Point Pedro magistrate later in the day. An official of the Indian Consulate from Jaffna is with the arrested fishermen to assist them in the legal proceedings. Before today's arrest, 28 Indian fishermen are already in Sri Lankan custody for similar charges. AIR correspondent reports that there is tension in fishermen hamlets in Nagapattinam after the fishermen were arrested today.
