Sri Lankan navy arrests 15 Indian fishermen

Sri Lankan Navy arrested 15 fishermen and apprehended three Indian fishing vessels in an early morning action today. Speaking to AIR, Sri Lanka Navy spokesman, Captain Akram Alavi said that two Indian fishing boats were caught near Delft Island when they were found fishing in Sri Lankan waters. 9 fishermen abroad these boats were then taken to Jaffna and handed over to officers of Fisheries Department and will be produced before the local magistrate for further legal action. Another 6 fishermen were caught near the coast of Thalaimannar and they have been taken to Thalaimannar for legal action, Captain Alavi added. Officials of Indian consulate in Jaffna are assisting the fishermen in legal proceedings. Before today's arrests, 18 Indian fishermen were in Sri Lankan custody.
