Sri Lankan government today imposed a 10 percent tax on the import of gold. According to agency reports customs duty of 5 percent and surcharge of 5 percent has been imposed with immediate effect to restrict the sudden surfeit of gold imports in the country.According to officials the move has also been made because Sri Lankan customs have nabbed a number of people smuggling gold out of the country, mainly to India, at the airports.
