Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris will brief the heads of diplomatic missions in Colombo on the UN Panel Report. The meeting will be held on April 21 in Colombo. The UN Experts’ Panel Report has suggested that there are credible allegations of serious human rights violations by the Sri Lankan forces in the last phase of the war, which led to military decimation of the LTTE in May 2009. It has urged the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to immediately set up independent international mechanism to investigate into allegations of war crimes. The Minister of External Affairs is currently in Bangladesh accompanying the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on his three-day official visit. Meanwhile, the government issuing a preliminary statement said the report is fundamentally flawed in many respects. “Among other deficiencies, the report is based on patently biased material which is presented without any verification,” the External Affairs Ministry said.Meanwhile, the United Nations on Monday said that UN Chief Ban Ki-moon and his senior advisers are currently finalizing the review of the report of the Panel of Experts on Sri Lanka before releasing it to the public.
