In Sri Lanka, deputy leader of United National Party (UNP) Sajith Premadasa has accepted the decision by party working committee to make him the leader of the UNP – led alliance for parliamentary elections expected in April.
''
'' Sajith loyalist and UNP MP Nalin Bandara said that the decisions reached by the working committee yesterday was positive when compared to the stand taken by the UNP earlier. The statement assumed significance as Sajith and his supporters had boycotted the meeting held yesterday. The meeting had decided that former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe will remain UNP leader but Sajith will lead the alliance and will be prime ministerial candidate at the elections.
''
''Mr. Bandara said that since Wickremsinghe is refusing to step down, Premadasa will not push for that right now as he is to lead the new alliance which will include the UNP. The UNP was divided on the issue of party leadership since Sajith lost the Presidential elections held last November. His supporters had been demanding the post for him was not accepted by Wickremsinghe.
