Sri Lanka: UN takes serious note on impending drought situation

The United Nations and its affiliated bodies in Sri Lanka have taken a serious note on the impending drought situation in the country and assured President Maithripala Sirisena their fullest cooperation to provide drought relief. <br/><br/>Top level UN officials in a meeting with President Sirisena today thanked him for establishing a Task Force to monitor and supervise the drought relief. The UN representatives said as the first step the UN could provide expertise in monitoring, evaluation and communication regarding the drought situation.<br/><br/>Sri Lanka is facing one of the worst drought situations of last four decade and the government has warned people of impending water and energy crisis. The country has received less than 70 percent of rain last year and next rainfall is not expected before March end.
