Sri Lanka: Top official arrested on charges of corruption

In Sri Lanka, a top official during former President Mahinda Rajapske was arrested today on charges of corruption during the earlier regime. Gamini Senarath, chief of staff to former President surrendered to a local court today and was remanded till Wednesday. He was evading arrest in connection with the disappearance of 27 million US dollars of state funds earmarked for a hotel building.

Earlier, Secretary to former President was arrested in September on corruption charges and has now been released on bail. The current government under President Maithripala Sirisena was elected with a pledge to root out corruption but has faced criticism for failing to pursue speedy trial of corruption charges against officials and family members of Mahinda Rajapakse. Two of Rajapakse's three sons, including MP Namal, have been charged with money-laundering. Those cases are still pending.
