Sri Lanka together with the International Organization for Migration will launch a 23 million programme to rehabilitate former LTTE cadres into the mainstream society with the help of countries like US, UK and Japan. The end of the three decade long civil conflict saw more than 10,000 LTTE cadres who had either surrendered or were captured by the Sri Lankan Army. The programme ‘Reintegrating ex-LTTE cadres into civilian life’ proposes to ‘educate, train and create livelihood components’ to facilitate their rehabilitation process. 3,000 ex-rebels are already being trained in plumbing, masonry, carpentry and electrical work at three centres. Sri Lankan Justice and Law Reforms Minister Milinda Moragoda said the initiative endorses President Mahinda Rajapaksa's vision of co-operation between the Government of Sri Lanka, the private sector, the Diaspora and the global community to build a prosperous future for all Sri Lankans.
