Sri Lanka cabinet has taken a decision to drop all remaining references to its British colonial name “Ceylon” from all the state institutions. A government spokesperson today said that cabinet will bring in a legislation, to effect the name change.The island became independent from Britain in 1948 and reverted to its traditional Sinhalese name of Sri Lanka in 1972 when it became a republic. The name Sri Lanka has a Sanskrit origin.
