Sri Lanka has decided to buy one thousand buses from India for public transport in major cities, by using part of 1.5 billion US dollars Indian line of credit. A cabinet memorandum approved this week said that 900 new buses of 40 seats each and 100 low floor buses will be procured from the credit line available with Ministry of transport and civil aviation. <br/><br/>It said the much required purchase will improve the public transportation therefore reducing the traffic congestion, pollution levels and fuel consumption caused by excessive number of private vehicles. The low floor buses will be used to develop a bus rapid transport system within limits of capital Colombo and other major cities. With the grant of cabinet approval, purchase process has begun and bids will be invited from Indian companies as per conditions stipulated under Indian line of credit.
