Sri Lanka to ask Donald Trump to drop human rights accountability charges

Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena has said he hopes US President-elect Donald Trump would grant redress to his country by not pursuing the human rights accountability charges against it.

Addressing a membership drive of his party in the southern town of Galle yesterday, the President said, he will write to Mr Trump to free them from these accusations.

Mr. Sirisena said, he was able to save the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and country's soldiers by giving the UN Human Rights Council necessary messages.

The President's remarks are significant in the wake of evolving political situation in the country and formation of a new political party by Rajapakse's loyalists.

The former President, who was credited with defeating LTTE in 2009, was accused of massive human rights violations but he has used it as a rallying point to garner support from hardcore Sinhala vote bank.

Though Rajapakse is still a member of Sri Lanka Freedom Party, SLFP led by President Sirisena, he is openly opposed to government functioning and formed a Joint Opposition group in parliament.

The UN Human Rights Council, UNHRC had adopted three successive resolutions against Sri Lanka with the US taking the lead. The current administration under President Sirisena has taken a number of steps including setting up of Office of Missing Persons to probe the war crimes.

However, there has been little progress as far as implementation is concerned and this has invited criticism from minority groups.
