In Sri Lanka, the main Tamil political group, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) today criticized former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and accused him of duplicity in opposing the new constitution proposals.<br/><br/>TNA leader R Sampanthan in a speech in Parliament, said that Rajapaksa had supported devolution of power when he was President but was now opposing it. His comments came as Joint opposition led by former President has opposed the new constitution and devolution of powers to provinces. <br/><br/>Questioning why the former President did not oppose the resolution for new constitution making, the TNA leader appealed to Rajapakse to capture power through other means and not use constitution as a way for his political goals. The Tamil leader said that lack of unity, disharmony caused by inequality, discrimination and exclusion have been their main ailments. <br/><br/>He said the country has spent very heavily on fighting a war that could have been well avoided if commitments made to democratic Tamil leaders were honoured. Sri Lanka has ventured upon new constitution making process but has failed to make much progress so far due to lack of consensus among various stakeholders. <br/><br/>
