In Sri Lanka, a section of hardline Buddhist monks today announced to broaden their opposition to framing of new constitution saying they will resort to street protests against it. <br/><br/>Maagalkande Sudaththa, a radical monk said in Colombo that hardline Buddhists were mobilising Sri Lankans from the majority ethnic group to resist a new power-sharing arrangement with Tamil minorities under the proposed constitution. He said monks are going from district to district to educate their followers about the dangers of the proposed constitution.<br/><br/>Parliament is in the process of drafting a new constitution in a bid to address Tamil aspirations but has been unduly delayed because of lack of consensus among main political parties and opposition from hardline sections. The topmost Buddhist clergy also issued a statement last month saying there is no need for a new constitution. <br/><br/>On the other hand, Tamil political groups have been demanding equal rights through the constitution and devolution of powers to Tamil dominated northern and eastern provinces. The country has seen a three-decade long war on the issue of discrimination with LTTE demand for a separate Tamil nation.
