In Sri Lanka, Supreme court has conveyed its decision on the Presidential term of incumbent Maithripala Sirisena saying it will be five years. The court gave its verdict with reference to Mr Sirisena's seeking opinion on whether he can stay in office for six years till 2021. <br/><br/>A five-bench held an open court hearing on Friday where the Attorney General opined that the President can stay in office till 2021. The 19th amendment, passed by Parliament in May 2015 has limited the Presidential term to five years. <br/><br/>However, a section of President party members had argued that the amendment was brought after Sirisena's election in January 2015 and cannot be applied retrospectively. After the new verdict, the presidential term will be over by January 2020 and elections will be held before that.
