The Sri Lankan government on Wednesday said that the public release of the Experts’ panel Report by the UN at this stage is ‘divisive”, and disrupts efforts to reinforce peace, security and stability in Sri Lanka. The government reiterated that the report was ‘fundamentally flawed in many respects.’ A press statement released by the Sri Lankan Ministry of External Affairs referred to the report as the ‘Darusman report’ as it was an advisory panel appointed by the UNSG and not authorized by the UN. The statement emphasized that accountability was an internal issue that would be dealt with domestically. Referring to the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) , it stated that the ‘Government has put in place of its own accord a domestic mechanism dealing with a range of issues relevant to the conflict with a view to promoting reconciliation and confidence among people.’It further said that the Government has established an Inter-Agency Committee consisting of seven key Ministries in order to proceed with the interim recommendations of the domestic mechanism, the LLRC. The conclusions of the externally constituted ‘Darusman Panel’, according to the government of Sri Lanka should not take precedence over the report of the LLRC, which has been domestically appointed. The Report of the LLRC is expected by mid May this year.
