The ruling coalition in Sri Lanka led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa secured victory in the re polls at the Kandy and Trincomalee district increasing its tally of seats to 144 , six seats short of the two -thirds majority. The final tally of seats in the April 8th General Election as announced by the Election Commission gives the ruling the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) 144 seats in a Parliament of 225 members. The main opposition, United National Party (UNP) led by the former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe has been able to secure only 60 seats. The pro LTTE Tamil National Alliance (TNA) , which had 22 members in the outgoing Parliament , now has 14 seats while the third front Democratic National Alliance (DNA) led by the defeated common consensus opposition candidate in the January 26th Presidential election, retired General Sarath Fonseka could only get seven seats. The new Parliament is scheduled to meet on Thursday where the new members will take their oath. The election for the post of Speaker is also likely to be held.
