Sri Lanka releases sick Indian fisherman on humanitarian grounds

Tamil fisherman released by Sri Lanka returned to Nagapattinam , Tamil Nadu today. The fisherman was arrested by Lankan fishermen along with 14 others last month when they were fishing near Kodiakarai. The sick fisherman from Nagai Nambiar Nagar was released by Sri Lanka on humanitarian grounds. The fisherman was handed over to Indian Coast Guard by Sri Lankan Navy at the international maritime boundary line. Later he was brought to Karaikal private port and handed over to local fisheries authorities. The fisherman was admitted to Nagapattinam Government Hospital. <br/><br/>Tamil Nadu fisheries minister K A Jayapal personally met the fisherman at the hospital. Sri Lanka has detained more than 39 fishing boats of Tamil fishermen for fishing in Lankan waters as a deterrent measure. Local fishermen are urging the government to ensure the release of 86 Tamil fishermen who are still lodged in Lankan jail before Diwali. They also urge the government to secure the release of 39 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka as their livelihood is affected.
