Sri Lanka presidential elections underway amid tight security

In Sri Lanka, more than 14 million voters are on Tuesday exercising their franchise to elect the country's new President in the post LTTE phase. Minor incidents of violence have been reported especially from the Jaffna.According to reports, after the initial slow voter turn out, people are coming to the polling booths at various places, including Jaffna to cast their votes. More than 45 per cent votes have already been cast with women outnumbering men.In Colombo, long queues could be seen in the Tamil dominated area of Wellawatta.The Centre for Free and Fair Elections said more than 6 minor incidents were reported during the Morning hours.In a press meet a short while ago, the common opposition candidate Retired General Fonseka said that there is ‘unusual enthusiasm’ amongst the voters. He alleged that certain ‘unruly elements’ of the armed forces are indulging in intimidating the voters.The incumbent president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, and former army commander Gen Sarath Fonseka, the two main candidates, appear set for a close finish in the electoral battle.Mr Rajapaksa had called the presidential poll two years before his six-year term ends in 2011.
