Sri Lanka: Preparations in full swing for holding of local body elections across country on Feb 10

In Sri Lanka, preparations are in full swing for holding of local body elections across the country on 10th February. <br/><br/>A total of 2053 nomination lists have been filed by different political parties and independent groups for election to 341 local bodies including Pradeshik sabhas, municipal and urban councils. <br/><br/>This will be the first time when elections will be held as per mixed electoral system with 60 percent candidates being elected by first past the post system while remaining 40 percent will be elected by party lists based on proportional representation. <br/><br/>The election will also be a landmark in Sri Lankan political history for providing women reservation of 25 percent seats for the first time. <br/><br/>Most of the places will have triangular contest with party alliances led by President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe and former President Mahinda Rajapakse. <br/><br/>Though it is local body election, it carries national significance because this will be the first election after more than two years and will test government popularity against joint opposition led by former President Mahinda Rajapakse.<br/><br/>Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) led by President and United National Party (UNP) led by Prime minister are contesting each other though they are together in national unity government.
