Sri Lanka: Political realignment starts taking place among political parties

In Sri Lanka, political realignment has started taking place among political parties to face the elections. This is despite the background that several groups are scheduled to approach Supreme Court tomorrow against the dissolution of parliament.
''
'' Several MPs led by new Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today formally joined the Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP). The SLPP was backed by Rajapaksa and won majority of seats at local body elections held in February. SLPP was formed by breakaway group of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) led by President Maithirpala Sirisena.
''
'' Several other SLFP MPs including Mahinda's son Namal Rajapaksa took the membership of SLPP today, in an indication that it will be the main political block in future. Both parties have decided to come together to face the polls and form a joint coalition with other parties under leadership of President Maithirpala Sirisena and Rajapaksa.
''
'' Similarly, United National Party (UNP) led by ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe is also working to form a broad alliance of like – minded parties for the polls. The party is also considering change of leadership, though there is nothing final in this regard.
''
'' A former minister said they are discussing several options including the name of UNP deputy leader Sajith Premdasa. Sri Lanka is facing political uncertainty after the President dissolved the parliament on Friday night. General elections have been called on 5th January and will depend on the outcome of the court proceedings.
''
