Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has accused the Opposition of attempting to sabotage the anti-COVID campaign by using legal arguments to block government finances. In a media statement, he said that former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe contended that the previous government led by him had passed only a vote on account which would last till the 30th of April and therefore, the present government would not have the legal right to allocate funds for any purpose whatsoever after the aforesaid date. Mr Rajapkaksa said that former Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has also been repeatedly making the same assertion via the social media.
''
'' Sri Lankan Prime Minister asserted that the President is vested with the power under constitution to allocate funds from the consolidated fund to maintain government services after Parliament has been dissolved. His comments came as Sri Lankan Parliament stand dissolved since early this month but general elections have been postponed due to COVID-19 situation.
''
'' A full budget was not passed last year because of the Presidential elections in November where Gotabaya Rajapksa was elected President and Mahinda Rajapksa was appointed as Prime minister.
