In Sri Lanka, several opposition MPs and NGOs have challenged the draft bill of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution seeking to hold provincial elections on the same day. People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) filed a Fundamental Rights Petition before the Supreme Court today saying the government can postpone the elections to three Provincial Councils, scheduled for this year, through the amendment. <br/><br/>The petitioner states that the government has restricted the sovereignty of the people by continuously postponing and delaying the local government elections. The petition requested the Supreme Court to issue an interpretation calling for the draft bill to be passed through a public referendum. Some opposition MPs allied to former President Mahinda Rajapakse have also challenged the proposed law on similar lines. <br/><br/>There has been no election in the island country since 2015 though the local body elections are long overdue. The draft amendment is being seen as a strategy to delay the provincial council elections also though the government maintains is being done to save resources.
