Police has arrested at least 19 people suspected of inciting violence.

Over 200 police officers and 100 officers from the Special Task Force had been deployed following the violence.

Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayaka said some political groups are desperately trying to turn the minor brawl into a Sinhala-Muslim clash and urged the public not to be misled by false propaganda.

Authorities said they were keen to avoid a repeat of violence seen in June 2014 when four people were killed and several injured in clashes between the two communities in the same region.
