Sri Lanka Navy arrests 25 Indian fishermen

Sri Lanka Navy arrested 25 Indian fishermen Tuesday morning for alleged violation of the International Maritime Boundary and charged them of fishing in Sri Lankan waters illegally.

Talking to AIR, Navy Spokesman Kosala Warnakulasurya said, the Indian fishermen were arrested and six of their boats were seized near Delft Island. The fishermen are being sent to Kankesanthurai to be handed over to the Fisheries authorities, who will produce them before a magistrate’s court later in the day.

In reply to a question on the repatriation of 181 freed Indian fishermen, Navy Spokesman said that the process is underway and may take a couple of days more to complete.

The two countries had agreed last week to free all the fishermen in each other’s custody and hold further talks on promoting alternative fishing practices in the region.

A meeting of the representatives of fishing associations of the two countries is also expected to be held next week in Chennai.
