Sri Lanka Navy arrests 17 Indian fishermen on charges of poaching

Sri Lanka Navy has arrested 17 Indian fishermen alongwith three boats on charges of poaching into Sri Lankan waters. A press statement issued this evening said, the arrests were made in two separate incidents yesterday in the sea area off the Delft Island.<br />''<br />''<br />''Subsequently, the arrested fishermen and their boats have been brought to the naval establishment SLNS Elara in Karainagar. The group of fishermen were handed over to the fisheries department in Jaffna for onward action. <br />'' <br />''<span style="color: #222222;">Sri Lanka has been releasing fishermen from time to time on humanitarian grounds but the boats are kept for longer time. The country has introduced a new law to impose fine for release of boats taken into custody. </span><br />
