In Sri Lanka, the Muslim Women's action network has demanded that the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) should be amended expeditiously.
''
''Speaking at a press conference organised by Muslim women activists in Colombo last evening, former minister Ferial Ashraff said the Muslim women have had problems with regard to MMDA and amendments made to the act should be made law without delay.
''
''The comments came as Muslim MPs recently agreed to amend the MMDA including raising of age for marriage to 18 years but the process has been delayed.
''
''The activists voiced their concerns over the attempts to thwart the process and urge the government to expedite the revisions.
''
''Speaking to media, member of Muslim Personal Law Reform Action Group (MPLRAG) Ermiza Tegal pointed out that the MMDA drafted by men and passed by a legislature of men came into effect in 1951 and the idea of change had come 30 years ago.
''
''The changes have acquired renewed urgency following Easter Sunday attacks which has put the Muslims in Srilanka under lens amidst demand to have a national identity.
''
''Some of the changes proposed in MMDA include 18 years as minimum age for marriage, making women eligible to be appointed as Quazis and registration of marriage etc.
